“Jason”, 9 years old
Jason was referred to Rx to Move because he spent most of his free time playing video games or watching television. While his mother often encouraged him to spend time with her outside this pattern of inactivity was difficult to overcome; he was reluctant to ride his bike or try organized sports due to weight, confidence, and interest. After receiving a referral to Rx to Move, Jason was asked what activity he might like to try. With the financial barrier to this activity removed and at the encouragement of his medical provider, Jason was enrolled to take classes at a local martial arts studio, something he’d always wanted to do but was too expensive for his family to consider. After the first week of class, Jason sat down at the kitchen table for dinner. He’d complained of a tummy ache all day but otherwise felt well. After some more questions, mom grinned from ear to ear; she realized Jason was experiencing sore muscles from his martial arts class for the first time! At last check-up, Jason had lost 3lbs and substantially increased his minutes of weekly activity.
