West Nile Virus Cases

County: Deschutes
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the number of incident cases of West Nile Virus.

Why is this important?

West Nile virus affects is a mosquito-borne Flavivirus. Corvid birds (crows, ravens, jays, magpies) are the reservoir; humans and other animals are considered “dead-end” hosts, meaning they may become infected but they do not transmit the infection further.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus are similar to flu-like symptoms, consisting of fever, headache and muscle aches. However, of human beings infected, only approximately one in five will have any symptoms at all. Additionally,  roughly one in 150 infected persons will have symptoms of central nervous system infection that may include neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, paralysis and coma.
